GarageBand from Apple Computer uses audio loops and MIDI loops in Apple Loops format. It can work with Audio Units plug-ins. Apple Macintosh Compatible FireWire and USB interfaces can be used to connect Audio and MIDI instruments to your Mac, and be recorded into GarageBand.

(Note, Pan curves were introoducded in GarageBand version 2, only Volume curves exist in GarageBand version 1)
One of the biggest deficiencies with GarageBand's implementation of Volume and Pan Curve points (We'll refer to them collectively as simply "Curve Points") is that they belong to a recording Track, not a Region. What this means is that if you Move or try to Copy and Paste a region or part of a region, the Curve Points do not travel with it, it remains wherever it was assigned in a GarageBand track. This means that should you have to move something after creating a set of Points, you have to move the points by hand. *08
Unfortunately you also can't copy Curve Points, so there is no way to duplicate a Curve elsewhere in the GarageBand track, or move them between tracks, however you can at least move multiple Points at the same time, thus keeping your finely tuned curve intact (you can also duplicate a track, and since the curve points belong to the track, the curve points are recreated in the new track) *08
Take a situation like this:
Quite a scary collection of Curve Points in my GarageBand timeline. Now suppose I need to move this region so that it starts at bar 61 instead of 60?
Ack! No joy in having to recreate that mess, or even move the points one by one!
However if you hold down the Shift key and click on each point you can select as many of them as you wish:
Better yet you can Drag-Select by clicking within the Curve area and selecting the entire group of points with a single drag. Simply start by clicking above or below the actual curve line and dragging:
All the points you drag across are selected. Now you can click on any one of them and drag the group:
And there you go, an easier way to move curve points in Apple's GarageBand 1, GarageBand 2, and GarageBand 3. For inforrmation on the new improvements in GarageBand 4, continue reading...

Garageband version 4, and later, offers extensive improvements in the way automation points are handled.
First, by using the "Lock Automation" menuItem
The curve points (Volume, Pan, AND any of the new Effect Automation Curves) become attached to the region and will travel with it, both within a track
(The region and its automation points move together when the region is moved)
As well as when being copied into another track!
Next, while you are still unable to directly copy and paste an automation point, by holding down the optionKey you may duplicate any selected points and drag them to a new position in the track, though not between tracks (Read the first part of the this tutorial if you need help in how to select the automation points).
Finally, even though I just told you that you can't directly copy curve points between tracks, there is a simple work around. If you have the points locked to a region, hold down the optionKey and drag the region into another track
Then turn off the Lock Automation menuItem
And delete the region
The automation points stay, so you have in essence copied the points themselves
