GarageBand FAQ: Open GB4 with GB3

Q. Can I open a GB4 file with GB3?

A.Since GB4 (and its enhanced file format) didn't exist when GB3 was released, GB3 does not have the ability to open the enhanced format of a GB4 file (Conversely, since GB3 and its file format already existed, GB4 can open GB3 files).

There is no way you can open the GB4 file if you only have GB3.

A friend with GB4 could export every track of the GB4 project and then you could rebuild the project yourself in GB3, that is the only solution to getting all the Audio and MIDI data from a GB4 project into GB3.
