Q. Can I install Apple's GarageBand on my Mac if I don't have a DVD drive?
A. The early versions of GarageBand, with it's many support files, is HUGE, several gigs, that's why it comes on a DVD. It would take at least a half dozen CDs to fit all of GB’s components.
You can not install GarageBand without some kind of access to a DVD drive, perhaps an external drive, or by using FireWire Target Mode.
Keep in mind, Macs that didn't originally come with a DVD drive are old, and not likely to run GarageBand well, if at all. If the problem is simply a broken DVD drive then these tips may be worth taking advantage of to get the software onto a machine that meets the minimum System Requirements.
When Apple opens its Mac App Store you will be able to purchase and download GarageBand by itself for $14.99!
