A. EQ is short for Equalization. Sound is made up of many frequencies from very low to very high. An EQ is like a volume control for different frequencies. For example, if the overall volume of a GarageBand project is good, but there is too much Bass, an EQ can reduce some of the Bass without affecting the higher frequencies (this is over simplified, but it should be good enough to get you going).
GarageBand offers many tools for changing EQ, including several styles of Graphic and Parametric EQ effects.
