GarageBand FAQ: Remove Section No Space

Q. How do I remove a portion of a recording without leaving a space from where the cut came?

A. Working in the Time Line (Not the editor pane), select the region, move the playhead to where you want to start the cut, and use the Split menuItem to isolate the portion you wish to Cut/Copy/remove. Repeat these steps for the end of your cut, then with the section you want selected, instead of pressing just the DeleteKey, hold down the CtrlKey and press the DeleteKey.
