Q. How do I convert the AIFF file Apple's GarageBand exported into an Mp3?

A. Follow this variation of the Never-Fail™ method:
Drag the sound file into the iTunes window, if it isn’t already there. Set iTunes’ Importing preference to Mp3, and select the quality you desire . With the name selected in the iTunes window choose Convert to Mp3 from under the Advanced menu.
When the conversion is done a new file will be created and listed in the iTunes window (Convert doesn’t actually convert, it recreates in the new format). Select this new iTunes song and choose Show in Finder from under the File menu. Your new Mp3 file will be revealed in Finder
In GarageBand '08 and later you can choose to "Export Song to Disk..." via the Share menu, tick the "Compress" checkBox, and select Mp3 from the PopUp menu, along with the quality you desire ... no further conversion is necessary.
